On January 21, the Trump regime in Washington announced a ‘TACO’ retreat from threats to assert control over the island-continent of Greenland, a colony of Denmark, and to impose punishing tariffs against any European or other country that objects. ‘TACO’ is short for ‘Trump Always Chickens Out’, referring to the history of the regime threatening to leverage intense levies only to ease, delay or cancel them.
Notwithstanding the retreat, the Trump regime’s rhetorical drive over Greenland has been highly successful. It parallels similarly successful rhetorical outbursts claiming the U.S. will ‘get out of NATO’, ‘leave Europe to its own devices’, or steer through a ‘peace plan for Ukraine’. The regime’s domestic policies are also littered with distracting rhetoric.
Why call the regime’s efforts ‘successful’? Because as intended, the rhetoric has drawn attention away from the U.S./NATO defeat in Ukraine, the defeat of the U.S. tariff war against China, and the ongoing drive to destroy Earth’s ecology through ramping up fossil fuel extraction and burning. And here is the misfortune: the entirety of media in the Western world as well as much of alternative media there has fallen for the ruses. Liberal imperialist spokespeople such as Jeffrey Sachs and John Mearsheimer also happily give credence to the ruses (sometimes in daily broadcasts and interviews!).
The ruses are being detailed and described for many months now in The Multiplural World website. The Trump regime goes to bed each night quietly smirking and saying to itself ‘suckers!’, while hoping these ruses and new ones to come continue to succeed in distracting attention from the deepening crises of imperialism.
Who in alternative media is analyzing the unstoppable emergence of the new, multipolar world, headed by Russia and China, resulting from the massive defeats and loss of credibility of global imperialism, headed by the USA? None, aucun, ni uno. How is this new world taking shape? What new and novel forms of class alliances are needed to achieve sovereignty and independence from imperialism? How can the successful drives for sovereignty merge with the historic imperative to build a new, socialist world of social equality and protection and repair of the natural world? The silence is deafening.
This silence is an ongoing tragedy for humanity. Time is rapidly running out to save the world from the twin scourges of imperialist war and global warming, as caused by expansionist capitalism.

Much ado is being made in global media–corporate and ‘alternative’ media alike–of the speech by Canada’s bankster prime minister Mark Carney on January 20, 2026 to the annual gathering of global banksters at Davos, Switzerland. Many analysts variously describe the speech as ‘watershed’, ‘pathbreaking’, and so on. It is nothing of the kind. One highly informative analyst of the U.S./NATO proxy war in Ukraine who should know better has described the speech as ‘watershed’. Rather, Carney’s speech is simply a recognition of the ongoing fragmentation and decline of the post-WW2 imperialist world order. This fragmentation and decline is being illustrated by the combined defeats of the U.S./NATO proxy war in Ukraine and the U.S.-led trade war against China.
Carney happens to be a literate spokesperson of the declining, imperialist order, in contrast to the crude, racist and ignorant spokesperson of the imperialist, police-state USA. That’s why he is being hailed across the political and media spectrum of the degenerate and disgusting liberal imperialist world order. In their own distinct way, Carney and other degenerate and disgusting liberals like him are engaged in the same process of distraction of attention from the accelerating economic and political decline of their liberal, post-WW2 imperialist world order and from the catastrophic, global warming emergency which their expansionist, capitalist order is visiting upon the world, threatening human civilization itself.
