Hundreds of people rallied yesterday in the Eaton Center mall in downtown Toronto in support of the Idle No More movement and Chief Theresa Spence. It was a very vocal protest, featuring the pounding of drums and singing. This is a 30-second video clip of that rally (with thanks to, Pance Stojkovski of the Socialist Project).

Rallies also took place today in front of Stephen Harper’s constituency office in Calgary, in front of the Legislature in Edmonton and in downtown Vancouver. Hundreds came together in Vancouver.
In eastern Ontario, the Idle No More movement blocked the rail line connecting Montreal to Toronto for several hours during the evening yesterday. Several thousands passengers on a VIA Rail train were delayed.
According to a report in the Globe and Mail, 21 members of Parliament visited Chief Spence over the weekend at her camp in Ottawa where she is staging a hunger strike, now into its 20th day.
The day before, former Prime Minister Joe Clark met with Chief Spence. Following the meeting, he issued a statement of concern, saying, “My experience has been that direct and honest dialogue is always useful and sometimes essential, particularly in dealing with issues as complex and multi-faceted as the relations between First Nations and Canada.”
“Chief Spence expressed a humble and achievable vision — one which I believe all Canadians can embrace.”
