On September 3, 2025, China hosted ‘Victory Day 80’, a massive military parade along Changan Avenue in central Beijing, showcasing the country’s latest and most advanced weapons to commemorate the 80th anniversary of China’s victory over Japanese imperialism and military-fascism in World War II.

President Xi Jinping delivered a speech from the rostrum on Tiananmen Gate (Gate of Heavenly Peace) and then inspected the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops from a parade car along Changan Avenue. This was the third major military parade across Tiananmen Square overseen by Xi as president. World leaders in attendance included Russian President Vladimir Putin, Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. They were seated on the rostrum along with serving members and former top officials and generals of the People’s Liberation Army.

Congress further amended the name in 1949, landing on ‘Department of Defense’ amid concerns that the abbreviation of the National Military Establishment (NME) sounded too similar to ‘enemy’… Secretary Pete Hegseth has for months pushed for reverting to the original name, arguing it would help further cement a “warrior ethos” in the military… Trump’s order does not formally rename the Department of Defense; that would require congressional approval. Instead, it makes the Department of War the secondary title and authorizes Hegseth to use titles like ‘secretary of war’ and ‘Department of War’ in official correspondence and public communications. To further cement the rebrand, Trump’s order requires all executive departments and agencies to “recognize and accommodate these secondary titles in internal and external communications.”…
